Dies iræ, dies illa / Solvet sæclum in favilla,

[The day of wrath, that day / will dissolve the world in ashes]

The dies irae is a musical sequence used in the requiem mass (mass for the dead) and is a depiction of the last judgement. While the Gregorian chant used in this pattern isn’t always used in musical setting of the mass, composers over the centuries have used it in secular works to depict death, fate, or the foreshadowing of evil. Hector Berlioz famously quotes the melody in the final movement to his Symphonie Fantastique, where he imagines the gathering of witches for their sabbath. In the twentieth century it is probably most recognized for its use in the opening credits to Stanley Kubrick’s film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining.
